The hotly anticipated Super Mario Galaxy was playable at an executive Nintendo reception earlier tonight. We had to wait patiently as the IGN Nintendo team couldn't get their hands off of it ... and for good reason. The game is incredibly charming, filled with creative charm and life that make it a clear killer app for the console.
Firstly, the game looks absolutely stunning. Not only does the game run in 480p and in widescreen, the game features some beautiful colors, fantastic texture work, and some stellar special effects. The Mario character model is easily the best we've seen in any Nintendo game so far: it's not hard to think that the in-game cut-scenes are pre-rendered at times. Galaxy, at the very least, shows that the Wii is a capable piece of hardware, so long as developers take time and care with it.
We love running around the miniature planets. In one sequence, we had to chase adorable bunnies, in a homage to the original S...

In a rough week for analysts, Microsoft shot down Michael Pachter's claim today that predicted they would lower Xbox prices across the board in response to Sony's PS3 price cut announcement this week. Microsoft stated that they are comfortable with where the Xbox 360 is priced and that they have no future plans to cut prices. Currently, the Xbox Elite is priced at $479, the Xbox Premium at $399, and the Xbox Core at $299. Pachter suggested that the prices would be cut to $399, $349, and $249. We're guessing Microsoft doesn't want to tempt Nintendo into price cuts for the current console champion Wii. [Market Watch]

newVideoPlayer("wiifit_gawker.flv", 475, 376);Nintendo put a promo video online for Wii Fit and its Balance Board accessory that shows its new title in action. After watching the video, we found out that Wii Fit can calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI). Here are some other secrets we found out about Wii Fit:
-The Balance Board features a pressure sensor which detects your weight shifts and predicts the movement for the rest of your body.
-There are a number of standard fitness activities included such as balancing exercises, pushups, yoga, BMI calculation and other calisthenics.
-Also included are a number of mini games such as hula hoop, soccer and a marble madness-type game which use the Balance Board in interesting ways.
-What's bound to become a favorite is the rhythm game that looks like a bastard mix between DDR and a Richard Simmons video (red tank top and short shorts not required).

Here's some more Wii news from E3 2007. Super Mario Galaxy, one of the most-awaited games for Nintendo's next gen Wii video game console, has finally been given a release date.
During Nintendo's E3 media briefing, Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer Reggie Fils-Aime revealed that Super Mario Galaxy will be hitting retail stores on November 12. The announcement was made while footage of a flying Mario dressed like a bumblebee was being shown, apparently.
The Regginator also had the following to say about Super Mario Galaxy:
In one sense, this is the first worthy successor to Super Mario 64, with varying degrees of gravity and the odd sensation of running upside-down on a planet. We believe this sets the new gold standard.
Sounds pretty cool. More updates as we get them.

Earlier, we covered Nintendo's E3 2007 Media Briefing that unveiled a lot of new stuff for the legendary game company's console and handheld. Now, we go a bit more in-depth with three new peripherals for the Nintendo Wii, namely the Wii Zapper, the Wii Wheel, and the Wii Balance Board.
First up, the Wii Zapper. Touted to both evolve and revolutionize the way we play FPS games on the Wii, this quasi-shotgun looking firearm for the digital battleground lets us aim, fire and reload realistically. Simply dock the Wiimote on the front where the barrel should be, and the nunchuck on the handle, and you're ready to mow down zombies and terrorists with a pull of the trigger. See the embed below for the controller in action.
Next is the Wii Wheel. We didn't get to see this, but suffice to say it's going to be the device to own come its simultaneous release with the highly-anticipated Mario Kart Wii. No luck on what sort of neat features it's going to sport, but we'll update yo...

In case you've missed our coverage of the Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo press events, here's a quick recap:
Microsoft
• Microsoft's big Xbox 360 announcement came not with a bang, but a whimper.
• Is the shiny new case enough to distract us from the lack of price cutting?
• But hey, at least we saw some pink. Sadly, they were only pretty controllers.
Nintendo
• Nintendo's got some new hardware goodies on the way for the Wii, like guns and steering wheels.
• They are continuing the Wii Sports craze with an aerobic thing called the Balance Board, so you can get rid of Bowser and your fat ass at the same time.
Sony
• We're happy to see a smaller PSP on the way after all this time, though looks a lot like the old one we've got sitting around here. Somewhere.
• Sony Ericsson phones will be letting you chat in 3D with Sony's Home avatars.
• Like the rest keynotes, not at lo...

The big boys in E3 are finally showing the aces up in their sleeves, and Nintendo's no exception, the legendary company behind beloved franchises such as Mario and Metroid is bringing out its biggest guns to bear in this year's Media Briefing at E3. We get you a sneak peek at what sort of weaponry Nintendo's bringing into the fray of this generation's console war.
The first piece of big news is the unveiling of the Nintendo Wii Zapper. Remember the gray-and-orange gun you used to shoot down ducks in Duck Hunt? It's the same here, except it's more of an attachment rather than an entire device. The Wiimote clips onto the front of the Zapper, and the Nunchuck on the back - probably for the handle. Retails at US$19.99, bundled with a free game specifically made for the Zapper. Awesome.
Next up are some juicy tidbits about two of the most highly-anticipated games for the Nintendo Wii, those being Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked...

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo_wii/Wii_Fit_an_in_depth_look_and_why_gamers_should_care'; Or maybe not. We're not insinuating anything here, because we love you no matter what. You know what else we love? That's right: Wii Fit.
While it's funny to quip that this is a perfect game for moms across America, we recommend that everyone take a closer look at the versatility of Wii Fit. How many of you own a treadmill or other exercise machine? Those things take up space. Maybe you'd like to own something like that, but you live in an apartment, like many Americans, particularly those under thirty who maybe haven't bought a house yet. Then space becomes a real issue, as this blogger well knows from years of apartment-living. But with Wii Fit and the balance board peripheral, suddenly working out with gear can take a lot less space -- and you get the added benefit of moni...

A whole lot of videos from E3 have been popping up all over the place, and we sure as heck aren't complaining. This time we're bringing you gameplay footage of Electronic Arts' upcoming multiplatform title, The Simpsons (DS, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Xbox 360).
The video shows Bart and Lisa fighting a school of angry dolphins in what looks like a seaside amusement park. Kinda reminiscent of the "dolphins rising up to enslave mankind" story in the Treehouse of Horror XI episode. This could also be the "God of Wharf" level mentioned before.
Anyway, we get to see Bart - both as himself and as his alter ego Bartman - fill penguins full of lead using his trusty slingshot. We also get to see Lisa summoning the Hand of Buddha to turn a billboard into a walkway. Check out the video below.
