The PSPBoy? The Apple iGame? Like many a video game myth we know, names like these went down in the annals of gaming history as some of the more hyped consoles we almost expected to launch. For today's April festivities, the folks from 99lives have provided a top five list of hoax video game consoles that includes other names that many of you may have heard from before. For our first system:

Sega Phoenix:
A rumor started back in 2005, the Sega Phoenix promised, among other things, the computing power of four AMD processors, a 120GB hard-disk drive, and backwards compatibility for all previous Sega gaming systems titles. Rundown: It had the PS3's specs, a Wii-like retro gaming library, and the Xbox 360's looks (with liberal amounts of blue) - imagine the phrase "Looks like pork, smells like fish, tastes like chicken..."
Sony PSPBoy:
The name says it all - a cross between the PSP and a Nintendo Gameboy portable consoles. As it turns out, this faux-po...

Here's more good news for those eagerly waiting for Super Paper Mario to make its way onto their Wiis. Codename Revolution reports that Super Paper Mario has garnered Game of the Month honors from EGM. The game got scores of 8, 9, and 9, with each category having a highest possible score of 10.

Super Paper Mario, with its mix of 2D and 3D platforming gameplay, is a reworking of a Nintendo game that was supposed to come out for the Nintendo Gamecube. While the Gamecube version has yet to be officially put to rest, the Wii version has quickly become one of the must-have titles for Nintendo's next gen video game console. For a closer look at why this title's making raves, check out this video.

Yes, it's a slow news day.

Alien Hominid is one hard game. All of us here at QJ have taken turns at it on Xbox Live and that's pretty much the general consensus around here. Tiger of Global Donimation (no, that's not a typo) concurs with us, and he's even playing the PC version (the keyboard controls are psychotic compared to the already-hard console version).

Instead of just whining about it and crying himself to sleep about it, though, he went and did something better: a Wiimote mod for Alien Hominid. According to Tiger, while his previous GlovePIE scripts were just proof of concepts, this one is "out of necessity" as "the level of frustration increases exponentially when using the keyboard as the developers originally intended."

If you've felt the same way, download the script below. If you don't have GlovePIE yet, you can get it here. Also, check out this video of the script in action.

Trekking through the intarwebs, we came upon news that the public beta for the Half Life 2 Wiimote mod is now available for download. There are still a few bugs that need to be worked out, but hey, it is a beta release after all. If you have any bug reports, please feel free to click on the "via" link below and let the creator know about them.

All you need to make the mod work is a Wiimote, a Bluetooth dongle, and of course, a copy of Half Life 2 for the PC. Also, here's an important note from Pat Glynn, the mod creator:

The first time you run a game using the wiimote mod it will create a soundcache and will take awhile. The wiimote might not connect the first time as well, if this happens to you restart the game and it should connect fine.
You can download the 32MB file by clicking on the download link below.

As of writing, there's still a few hours to go until the day that pranksters worldwide like to call their own. Unfortunately that doesn't mean we get to escape from the droll task of reporting on outlandish and suspect game console rumors. This latest one is the most unlikely example we've seen for a while and it's not just the claimed features that stir our suspicions. The premise of the "Wii-volution" rumor is that Nintendo is on the verge of releasing a version of the Wii with an HDMI port and a 160GB Hard Disk Drive integrated into the base of the console. The evidence is an extremely pixelated and blurry photo which points to something on the panel of a black Wii. We're just speculating here, but we think that model could potentially be a developer's kit. And with that, we already feel stupid for in any way taking this kind of half hearted rumor seriously. Hopefully, tomorrow's efforts will be a lot more convincing.

Sega has launched three of their franchise stalwarts for the Wii's Virtual Console and Hudson Soft is not planning on being left behind. Hudson announced that five TurboGrafx-16 games are hitting North American Virtual Consoles this April. Those five titles are Bravoman, Bonk's Revenge, Battle Lode Runner, Shockman, and Dragon's Curse. All of them would be released on April and will cost 600 Wii Points.

Bonk's Revenge will of course star the head-butting caveman Bonk and will feature more complex levels and tightened graphics. Other games in the list would also get the visual upgrade it needs and one of them, Battle Lode Runner, will feature multiplayer actions.

As to the exact date of when they'll hit the VC, Dragon's Curse should be available by Monday, April 2. As for the four other games, no specific date has been announced.
